This project spans 2.4 kilometres along the north bank of the Bow River, from 14th Street to Centre Street, and is designed to protect the Sunnyside community and Memorial Drive from future high-water events while enhancing public access and pathway use. Wilco’s scope includes installing sheet pile flood-protection walls, constructing stone boulder walls, and delivering the landscape works that will complete the project in 2026. The revitalized corridor will feature upgraded pathways, seating areas, and public amenities, strengthening connections between the north bank and the south/downtown river pathway network. These improvements will encourage year-round use by residents, commuters, and visitors. Working within a narrow construction zone between the roadway and the river has required careful planning and sequencing. Limited laydown space, restricted access points, and the need to minimize impacts on traffic and pedestrians have all contributed to the project’s logistical complexity. Upon completion, the enhanced riverbank will include more than 200 new caliper trees, forming a continuous landscaped ribbon that improves resilience, walkability, and the overall riverfront experience.
