Drumheller has made great improvements in flood resiliency in recent years. On this project, Wilco realigned Michichi Creek in a residential area. This included raising the banks to increase capacity as it enters the Red Deer River. Wilco built the new banks with fortified hedge brush willow/coir matting construction, which will root in and create a naturalized, armoured creekbank. Work included installing a modern lift station complete with an automation kiosk, pumps and contingency equipment. Building a new creek channel involves working around river/water levels and diverting rising water, which is a challenge in a short construction season. Crews excavated and moved 60,000 m3 to create the new channel and imported clay fill to create the raised banks, running along the creek and along the river as well. 30,000 live willow stakes were harvested in the region and grown to size in a nursery to be used in the revegetation of the project.
