Working in vibrant urban settings is among the most challenging aspects of our industry – especially in a dense district filled with busy restaurants, storefronts, and essential services. Marda Loop endured several years of demolition and full reconstruction to achieve modernized infrastructure that replaces aging utilities, enhances pedestrian access, and revitalizes this beloved urban village for generations to come. Wilco’s scope included demolition and removal of the asphalt roadway, breaking out concrete sidewalks right up to storefront windows, constructing below-grade soil cells, and completing the new streetscape landscaping. These soil cells manage surface stormwater and convert it into a reliable water source for newly planted street trees, helping them thrive in a constrained concrete environment. Daily challenges in this setting were significant: overhead powerlines and business signage, constant pedestrian activity navigating around active work zones, unexpected utilities dating back decades, and extremely limited space for equipment, trucks, and crews. Despite these constraints, Wilco delivered a streetscape that enhances walkability, supports local businesses, and elevates the character of Marda Loop.
