Wilco built this project in the heart of the bird sanctuary, working around the schedules of migrating bank swallows and nesting osprey. The project removed the stagnant lagoon which had not flowed as part of the river in nearly a hundred years. Wilco constructed a new river channel from the Bow River, winding through the lagoon and to a new outlet on the downstream end. The salvaged river rock material, which had been deposited into a giant berm after the 2013 floods, was shifted and moved to create two new islands in the river. The result is a river channel that flows through the park, removing the stagnation, and breathing new life into the natural area for wildlife and fish. The showpiece is the new ‘crossing structure’, a bridge that doubles as a cedar timber art piece, constructed by PCL Construction for Wilco. Wilco’s establishment team ‘grew-in’ the landscape this year, ensuring the 20,000 willow stakes are thriving, and the new channels are thriving and resilient towards future high waters.
