This boardwalk/ lookout pier reaches out into the newly constructed wetland storm pond, through the cattails and aquatic plants to sit out over the water. The boardwalk winds its way to the viewing deck, which doubles as a bird blind. Heavy Industries manufactured the steel elements, with Wilco constructing the galvanized steel screw pile foundations and steel framing, and the rough sawn, fir timber deck structure. The pier is the feature artistic piece of the 40 acre wetland park, encircled by two kilometers of pathway, with 600 poplar and aspen trees. Screw piles were installed in frozen winter conditions to allow access into the wetland without disturbance to the soils. The amenity sits next to the new park space and playground in the heart of the community. Hotchkiss sits in Calgary’s southeast corner, with quick access off of the ring road, and next door to Ralph Klein Park.
