With the expansion of Deerfoot Trail, the project required a storm pond constructed to handle runoff from the new hard surface areas, and the loss of the greenspace that resulted from additional lanes. Wilco built this storm pond to handle stormwater prior to entering the Nose Creek system. Crews installed storm infrastructure to enter the pond, which was built with an impervious clay liner and riprap protection. Wilco also stripped and graded for new lanes of traffic, moving 250,000 m3 of earth and importing 60,000 m3 of base gravels to build up the new grade, as well as installing 900m of storm pipe. The project is part of an overall upgrade to the Highway 2 network through the Calgary city limits, adding lanes, increasing bridge capacity, and improving on and off ramps. This phase connects 11th St NE to northbound Deerfoot, and adds an extra lane in the median in both directions.
