This is a challenging but important revitalization of 33rd and 34th Avenue and the Marda Loop area as a whole. The project increases pedestrian accessibility and traffic flow, and will help once again make this a destination in the city and help local businesses thrive. Wilco’s scope included road demolition and removals, excavation and grading, preparatory work. Wilco constructed blocks and blocks of soil cells throughout: these are below-grade structural pockets that allow new trees to be planted in good soils, but also allow concrete sidewalks to be built overtop. Challenges included working and excavating around a mix of existing infrastructure and utilities, and in very tight spaces up against businesses front windows, and between traffic and pedestrians. New street trees, planters, and furnishings will refresh the community and provide gathering spaces or seating areas that enhance local businesses. Sequencing, planning, coordination, and safety are a high priority on these projects.
