2024 was the first of a two year project at YYC, removing and replacing the West Runway. Wilco’s scope is to remove 250,000 m2 of asphalt runway, and 60,000 m2 of concrete – to be crushed onsite and reused as structural fill material. The work includes stripping and stockpiling of topsoil, moving 50,000 m3 of fill material onsite, and preparing 250,000 m2 of subgrade for the new runway surface. This work will carry on in 2025 with a bigger crew, using our pulverizer drum to break up the concrete runway and make removal and crushing simpler. Wilco’s scope is a part of the overall $200 million upgrade to increase YYC’s capacity, and upgrade the facility with improved lighting, storm drainage, and surfacing. Scheduling is of the utmost importance when working at an airport, and Wilco’s team ensures we meet production estimates, stay on schedule, and work safely in this challenging location.
