Working at an elevation of 7238 feet brings weather challenges and a short construction season. Wilco moved quickly to build this new parking facility in Kananaskis in just three months, which was much-needed to accommodate additional hikers and users. Wilco cleared the land, working to protect and preserve small stands of Whitebark Pine and archaeological sites. Wilco imported 20,000 m3 of fill material from borrow sites elsewhere in the Park, built up the grade and drainage courses, and constructed the parking lot. The new site includes a washroom building, trail kiosks and signage, highway lane widening and guardrails, rock walls and landscaped areas, and new naturalized trail connections leading up into the mountains. Crews worked on multiple tasks simultaneously; every day is critical for completion when winter weather can set in without warning, and not want to leave again till the highway reopens mid-June the following year when the snow clears.
